Be sure of Better Putting in 2010

Page With Your Community & Friends!

Happy New Year to all my readers and subscribers here at putting tips! Throughout 2010 my commitment remains to bring you all the very best and latest putting advice containing effective ideas on how you can become a better putter.

Keep your eyes open for new features in 2010 including video tips and ‘before and after’ footage of our pupils. If you have not done so already please make sure you sign up to our regular e-newsletter Picking It Out The Cup; this sign up is available on any putting tips page.

I would like to challenge all my followers here at Putting Tips to improve their putting performances in 2010; how would taking fewer putts affect your scores? How would this improvement feel to you?

With virtually no physical limitations, better putting is THE MOST realsitic area to improve for any golfer playing the game. So with this in mind I would like to suggest you take your first step, this first step involves answering 6 simple questions.

Q1: What is your current handicap or average score?

Q2: If you improved your putting performances, what would it be possible to reduce this handicap or average score to?

Q3: What 5 aspects of putting are preventing your improvement? Include everything from technique, mind set right the way through to equipment.

Q4:What 3 actions do you need to take if you are to improve?

Q5: Who do you need to help you with these actions?

Q6: When are you going to start?

When you answer these questions I would strongly suggest that you write down your answers as opposed to just thinking them in your mind. Taking the time to write down your answers could prove to be the most important task you undertake this year. Making this active commitment is very powerful and has been proven time and time again to be more effective in empowering people to take action and fulfilling their goals.

As always can I ask you to send me your answers and post a comment below. I really hope to create a putting community on this site and your interaction is crucial in achieving this. I look forward to hearing from you and reading your comments.

    1. I range between 73 - 77 - meant to shoot 74 and take around 30 - 36 putts per round.

    2. I think I should be knocking 2-3 shots a round off my game through putting alone (on average). So I would shoot around 70 - 74 which is almost my target for this year and without improving anything else!

    3. I can’t afford to buy enough putters :o) , I can’t afford to buy a bigger house to store more putters :o), inconsistent with long putting, my course’s greens are not good enough all year round - ok so I’ve boiled your five down to just one that is me - the others are other people’s faults… sorrry

    4. Buy another putter and then find a repeatable system for getting long putts closer to the hole. I’m cool on 5 footers and under (I have to be I leave myself so many!!!)

    5. Well I will accept money for the new putter from just about anyone - I will probably talk it through with my friendly neighbourhood golf pro, Gareth. Although I putt better than him sometimes :o)

    6. Not now - snow everywhere. March will be short game time me thinks… currently working on mental and long game…

    Hi Mike

    Right here we go!

    1) I play off an unofficial 22 at the moment, shooting low 90’s on average.

2)After analysing my putting over a few rounds and picking myself back up off the floor I reckon through improving putting alone to be able to knock off half a dozen strokes at least.

    3) 5 is tough.. but for starters short putt pressure is a killer for me so I would say my mind set needs working on in conjunction with some technique work….Happy with my putter though! it’s not the equipment that’s to blame this time lol :-)

    4) To improve…1) dedicated putting practice….2) pressure practice, will have to get the boys together for a few money competitiions!…3) err more practice!

    5) Well I’ve had a putting lesson, know and appreciate the principles so it’s down to just me applying myself…no excuses or anyone else needed, though if Paula Creamer fancies giving me some extra tuition I ain’t complaining!

6)As soon as I can find the putting green as Portugal is approaching rapidly!

If you’ve got any novel indoor putting practice tips Mike then post em quick lol!

    Cheers

    Chris

    Hi Dave,
Thanks for the info! When the snow clears and you get to hit the course again make sure you collect your putts per round. Whilst putting stats are influenced by other elements of the game it is a key stat to know. You said you take between 30 and 36 putts, well thats a BIG window! That would be like me saying I shoot between 80 and 100; discover your average and you will have a much clearer picture of your current ability. Remember if you are going for a journey you need a current location before you can plot your route!
It was interesting reading your comments about the greens you play on. I agree that the quality of the greens you play on is out of your hands but I would like to ask you a question:
Is it POSSIBLE to hole ANY putt on the course next time you play?
The answer has to be YES, it is POSSIBLE. Take a look through some old posts about the POWER OF POSSIBLE.
I look forward to keeping up with your progress this year Dave and good luck!
    Mike

    1) my handicpa is 3 and i usally shoot between level par and 4/5 over
    2) i believe better putting would take me below par more often than not, i don’t convert the majority of birdie chances i generate
    3) I’m not sure hence me looking on the web for some advice. I must admit short putts on bumpy greens over the winter has knocked my confidence a little but i’m sure i can get iot back once the greens smooth out again.
    4) Again, looking for some advice on how to improve. I have generally just putted and not thought about it much. But wanting to beat par (and forget the missed short ones over the winter) means i’m looking to improve my putting
    5) I’ve never had a lesson, and probably never will, but i take note if i see/hear something that makes sense to me.
    6) well like all alchoholics/drug abusers i’ve admitted to needing help so that should be the first step in improving my putting and breaking par most weeks.
